Sometimes, life presents unexpected opportunities that change our course forever. That was certainly the case for Ross Hartshorn when he met Susan Cohen on a cruise.
"Our conversation about writing planted a seed in my mind," he recalls, "but it wasn’t until I was furloughed that I finally took the leap."
With time on his hands and a newfound motivation, Hartshorn dedicated himself to writing his autobiography. "Just eight weeks after that fateful meeting, I had completed my book—a testament to the power of seizing the moment."
Writing became more than just a personal endeavour; it turned into a passion that Hartshorn wanted to share with others. "My autobiography and Kumakawa’s both capture the essence of our extraordinary lives," he explains. "These books offer not only entertainment but also valuable lessons on what to do—and what not to do—in life."
Of all his works, his book All Square holds a special place in his heart. "It relives real experiences, allowing readers to reflect on their own journeys and recognise that, no matter how tough things get, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel."
Beyond autobiographies, Hartshorn’s love for storytelling led him to create a five-book series of Kumakawa children's books.
"Every character, whether human or animal, is inspired by real-life experiences," he shares. "My hope is that the love and care I poured into these stories shine through for readers of all ages." One of the core messages of these books is that no matter your shape, size, or mental health challenges, "you can always achieve anything you set your mind to."
As he continued his writing journey, Hartshorn was fortunate to discover The Book Whisperers through his mentor, Mary Turner Thomson.
"Their supportive Zoom meetings have been an invaluable resource, offering guidance and encouragement," he says. "Being part of such a fantastic group has been an enriching experience, helping me grow as an author while connecting with like-minded individuals."
For those who are just beginning their writing journey, Hartshorn’s advice is simple: "Enjoy the process. Embrace the moment and write freely, allowing your thoughts to flow naturally. Editing can always come later, but capturing your raw ideas and emotions is where the true magic happens."
Looking back, Hartshorn never imagined he would become an author. "However, deep down, I always knew I could write."
That realisation has been the most rewarding part of his journey—proving to himself and others that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.
